In the summer of 2001, founders Keely Enright and David Reinwald opened the Village Playhouse in a former Ladies Workout Express next to the Food Lion on Coleman Blvd in Mount Pleasant. From the beginning, the mission was to bring classic works of the 20th Century, as well as new dramas and musicals, to the East Cooper community in a space that was exciting and comfortable.
Instead of auditorium seating, there would be small tables with candles-instead of a traditional theatre space, there would be a modified black box with a cozy beer and wine bar. The goal: to produce the very best theatrical experience for patrons in a way that was intimate and personal. This intimate presentation of great works has become a hallmark of the Village.
More than seven years later, the Village Playhouse and Repertory Company is now one of Charleston’s most celebrated performing arts organizations, successfully changing the cultural landscape East of the Cooper and throughout the Lowcountry.
The Village Repertory Company believes in taking chances. To be a great theatre requires artistic confidence and support. It requires a love for theatre and it cannot be accomplished without courageous talent. The dedication and passion of the Village artists can be seesn in every production.
Because of the loyal and growing support of its audiences and contributors, the Village has evolved into a sophisticated organization with award winning productions, including Charleston’s Best Play and Best Actress 2007. Since opening its doors, the Village has produced 65 dramas, comedies and musicals, including more than a dozen Pulitzer Prize winners, 10 South Carolina premiers and 5 world premier original works. Now recognized as one of Charleston’s most respected cultural treasures, the Village plays to an average 90% audience capacity. The Village Repertory is a proud member of Theatre Communications Group and a founding member of the League of Charleston Theatres.
